Frequently Asked Questions

It’s natural to have questions when searching for a self storage unit, especially if you’re renting for the first time. This FAQ guide provides straightforward answers about pricing, unit sizes, security, access, and more at our nationwide locations.

Whether you’re new to storage or a returning customer, Compass Self Storage is here to make the process simple.

Renting a Storage Unit

How do I rent a storage unit?

You can rent a unit online, by phone, or in person at any of our facilities. The process is convenient and fast. Simply choose your unit size, sign the rental agreement, and you’ll receive your access code.

What types of storage units are available?

We have a wide range of sizes, from small 4×4 to spacious 10×30 units. We offer a wide variety of storage types, including climate-controlled storage, drive-up units, RV and boat storage, small business storage, personal storage, and commercial storage. Please note that available sizes and types vary by storage facility.

What is climate-controlled storage?

Climate-controlled storage is a specialized storage type that maintains a specific temperature range to help shield delicate items from extreme temperatures in the summer and winter. Common items that benefit from climate control include:

-Wooden furniture
-Electronics
-Collectibles
-Documents
-Clothing
-Musical instruments

What are the storage unit rates?

Prices vary by space size and location, so contact the facility near you to find out the rates for each unit. Our managers will be happy to help you determine size and pricing.

Do your storage units have high ceilings?

Ceilings in our storage units range from four feet for the bottom row “lockers” (small closet spaces) to between 10 and 14 feet in larger units. High ceilings can help you make more efficient use of space in your unit, as they allow you to stack items.

Do I need an appointment to view the facility and its storage units?

We recommend calling ahead, but you can visit any of our facilities without an appointment during our office hours. We’ll gladly provide you with information and a tour of the facility.

What do I need to bring with me when I rent a storage unit?

To rent a unit, you only need a current government-issued photo ID, a current address, and a phone number at which you can be reached.

Can I sign a lease for or with my friend or relative?

Unless you have proof that you are either the legal guardian of an individual or an authorized agent for a business, only the tenant named on the lease may sign the lease.

What if I need more or less space after I move in?

It’s not always easy to determine if you have the right amount of space until you’ve actually moved in. But we’re flexible to your needs: If you’d like a smaller unit, a larger unit, or an additional unit, the manager will be happy to help make it happen.

Access and Amenities

Does Compass Self Storage offer drive-up storage units?

Yes, Compass Self Storage offers drive-up units so you can simply pull your vehicle to your storage unit’s door and load or unload anything you need. Drive-up access is especially convenient if you plan to store heavy boxes or bulky furniture, or if you need to visit your storage unit frequently.

When can I access my storage unit?

Most of our facilities are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., but check your facility’s access hours just in case. Some storage facilities offer 24-hour access, but it’s best to confirm with your local Compass Self Storage location before renting a space.

What security measures does Compass Self Storage provide?

We offer various security measures at our storage facilities for your peace of mind, such as:

-Fully fenced perimeters
-Well-lit properties
-Electronic gate access
-24-hour digital video recording cameras
-Bluetooth-enabled access to units and gates

Will anyone else have access to my space?

No, when you rent a space, you provide the lock, and only you have the key. The only thing lock-related that we do is sell locks at our front offices.

If I lose my key, can you help me get into my storage unit?

o, we do not have a copy or master key to any of our storage units. You would need to have your lock removed by a locksmith. If you need one, we can recommend a local expert.

Can you accept deliveries for me?

Yes, we’re happy to accept deliveries for you from FedEx, UPS, and other delivery companies. We’ll sign for you and have them waiting upon your arrival. Please speak with your facility manager to make the necessary arrangements.

The Moving Process

What is the move-in process?

After choosing your storage unit and completing the rental agreement, you will receive your gate code. Move whenever you need to!

Do you sell packing supplies?

Yes! We offer a wide range of boxes in various sizes, along with tape, Bubble Wrap, and other packing and moving supplies, ensuring your moving process is as smooth as possible.

Do you have movers?

We do not have movers, but on a local level, our store management teams can recommend a list of reputable and dependable movers that we will be happy to share with you. We can also provide information on our U-Haul truck rentals.

Does your facility accommodate large moving vans?

Yes, our managers can offer you pamphlets with many helpful tips on packing your items, as well as how to place them in your storage space – this assures easy access and the most efficient use of your space.

Leases, Payment, and Insurance

How long of a contract do I have to sign?

We don’t require long-term contracts or a certain deposit – each lease is month-to-month.

Can I pay my bill automatically every month?

Yes, we encourage our customers to sign up for automatic monthly payment to avoid missed payments and late fees. Once you sign up, your lease will renew at the beginning of each month.

Will I receive a monthly invoice?

We normally don’t send you a monthly invoice, but we can if you request it.

What about insurance?

We highly recommend that you obtain insurance on your own, as we don’t insure your belongings ourselves. Some homeowner and renter’s policies cover items stored. You should check with your insurance company to verify whether or not yours does.
